When the clocks go back and the drizzle sets in, a week of guaranteed sun goes a long way. These eight destinations are all within comfortable flying distance of the UK and stay warm through our winter - here is what to expect and when to book.
Where the sun still shines in winter
- Dubai & the UAE - 25–28°C, 7 hours from the UK, great for a stopover or a full week
- The Canary Islands - 22–24°C, 4.5 hours, the closest reliable winter sun to the UK
- Egypt (Hurghada & Marsa Alam) - 24–26°C, 5 hours, superb value and Red Sea diving
- The Gambia - 30°C+, 6 hours and no jet lag (same time zone as the UK)
- Cape Verde - 26°C, 6 hours, quiet beaches off the coast of West Africa
- Thailand & the Maldives - long-haul, but peak dry season and warm seas
When to book for the best fares
For December and February half-term, fares climb fast - book 3–5 months ahead. For flexible dates in January (the cheapest month to fly), you can often find a deal much closer to departure. Travelling from a regional airport such as Birmingham or Manchester frequently beats London fares once parking and transfers are counted.
Flight or full package?
For the Canaries and Egypt, an all-inclusive package usually undercuts booking flights and hotels separately. For Dubai and long-haul, a flight-only booking with a hotel of your choice often works out better. Tell us your dates and we will price both ways and send you whichever is cheaper.
